This region is known for its cheese, so be sure to shop around for some of the finest in the US. About 10 miles southwest of Wilmot, OH, Heini’s Cheese Chalet makes a great stop. About five miles off the byway lies Mount Hope, OH. This small Amish community offers the Farmer’s Produce Auction. Let the scent of blooming bouquets entice you in the spring, pick from plump pumpkins in autumn, and purchase fresh, local produce anytime between April and November.
Mt. Hope is also home to all sorts of other auctions. The Friday after Thanksgiving, when you've had your fill of tasty turkey dinner, stop by the annual Toy Sale. This special event begins at 6 p.m. and lasts through the night, so stay up to see the highest bidder and for a chance to win prizes!
If you are looking for more Amish goods, the Amish Country Gourmet at the Holmes County Amish Flea Market in Walnut Creek, OH, southeast of Mount Hope, offers a wide variety of delectable delights. Out of dozens of regional-recipe-based sauces, dressings, dips, jams, jellies, and dessert mixes, you’ll find just the right flavors to spice up your culinary life, Amish-style.
While in Walnut Creek, satisfy your sweet tooth with a visit to Coblentz Chocolates, another family-run business dedicated to deliciousness. If you are among the decision-challenged, you’ll want to prepare yourself; this local chocolate manufacturing company offers an incredible 114 varieties of chocolate candy. Step over to the viewing area to see how these special treats are made from their time-tested recipes.
When you reach the halfway mark of the byway, in Millersburg, OH, seek out Norman’s Bakery and Deli and check ‘bread’ off your shopping list. But beware! Not just any bakery, this local treasure offers delectable hand-made donuts and pastries that may prove impossible to resist. For a meal on the spot, come around lunchtime and discover Norman's specialty potato soup and classic deli sandwiches.
