Cocks Comb Trail and Overlook (VA)
Witness the effects of time during your hike to the jagged sandstone rocks at the top of this steep trail. From the valley, these rocks resemble a cock's comb -- evidence of ancient lake shores that have been compressed and eroded over millions of years.
Location: Cocks Comb Trail and Overlook is located on State Highway 654.

Hand-built rock retaining walls guide you down this historic road, built in 1826 by Colonel John Jordan as a way to access his pig iron furnace and iron mines in the valley below. This was the first road to cross North Mountain to the west.
Location: Colonel Jordan Wayside is located on Collierstown Road between I-64 and State Highway 654.

These two forests stretch from one end of Virginia to the other, as well as extending into West Virginia, along the ruggedly beautiful Appalachians. Virtually every type of outdoor recreation activity you can imagine is available.

Good forest management, which includes controlled burning and harvesting, helps forests to be healthy and productive. Along this 0.4-mile trail, observe the vigorous mosaic of trees and plants of different ages and species.

North Mountain Overlook Trail (VA)
This easy trail affords sweeping views of both private and public lands, Lake Roberson, and the distant Blue Ridge Mountains. The land around you has been settled and used for hundreds of years.
Location: North Mountain Overlook Trail is located along State Highway 654.

Admire 100-year old evergreen rhododendrons while you walk along this 268-foot trail, which is accessible for wheelchairs and walkers. An overlook is at the end of the trail, where you'll find a sweeping view of the Rich Hole Wilderness Area.
