Midland Trail
The New River Gorge Bridge, WV
The world's second-longest single-span steel arch bridge is 3030 feet long and 876 feet above the New River. Every year, an Annual "BASE Jumping" event is held here each third Saturday of October known as Bridge Day. (BASE stands for Building, Antennae, Spans, Earth). During this event, visitors and thrill seekers alike will watch adventurers as they jump off the bridge and plummet towards the ground with only a few moments to open their parachutes.
On a regular day at the bridge, travelers may simply want to explore the river area and visit the National Park Service Visitor and Interpretive Center, which is located at the north end of the bridge.
