The city Fayetteville and the Fayette Plateau is an outdoor adventure Mecca. Activities available in and around the city include world renowned white water rafting, kayaking and float trips on the New River, horseback riding, rock climbing, hiking and mountain biking.
The town has an impressive historic district as well containing some 133 contributing structures. The Fayette County Courthouse, the Altamont Hotel, and the E.B. Hawkins House are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. During 1843 to 1940, Fayetteville grew to serve as the legal and business center for a prosperous coal producing county.
