Coal Heritage Trail
Oak Hill, WV

Oak Hill was the location of a branch railway line built by the White Oak Railway Company in 1903. This spurred development of the community, and by the 1940s, it had supplanted the towns of Thurmond and Mount Hope as the commercial center of southern Fayette County. While Oak Hill was never a mining town, its association with the White Oak Coal Company, subsequently New River Fuel Company, and after that the New River Coal Company, established it as an important West Virginian community.

The Oak Hill Railroad Depot at the corner of Virginia and Central Avenues is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only example of a period railroad depot which, while not in use, remains intact.
