Halfway House (Tyree Tavern), WV

The Halfway House or Tyree Tavern, one of three buildings in Ansted listed on the National Register of Historic Places, faces the former James River and Kanawha Turnpike, which is now the Midland Trail. The Halfway House served as an inn after the 1820’s. In its heyday the tavern served travelers such as Daniel Webster, Henry Clay and John Breckenridge, who sought the shortest east-west route between the Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mountains.
