Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike
Camp Bartow, WV

Confederate Camp Bartow straddles the Turnpike at the base of the mountain, overlooking the Greenbrier River. In the October 1861 Battle of Greenbrier River, Union troops from Cheat Summit Fort fired on the Camp from across the river, but retreated after a 4 hour artillery battle. The Confederates abandoned the fort soon thereafter. Earthworks on the hills behind the house are visible from the byway and the backway.
