Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike
Traveler's Repose, WV
Traveler's Repose served as an Inn for Turnpike travelers, a Post Office, and later the telephone exchange for the valley. The original house was in the midst of artillery fire during the Battle of Greenbrier River. Late in the war, Bushwhackers burned the house, and this house was built upon the old foundations in 1869. The house is private property with interpretive signs in front, and is easily seen from the backway where one may park off the highway.
