Cheat Summit Fort, WV

Cheat Summit Fort, also known as Fort Milroy, was a Union fortification straddling the turnpike on top of Cheat Mountain. In September 1861, an attempted attack by General Lee's troops was foiled when their advancing force was driven back well outside the fort. After a bitter winter, the Union troops moved on in spring of 1862. The remains of the fort and cabin platforms are clearly visible with a short walk. The Forest Service site has parking, picnic tables, and interpretive signs.
