Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum, WV
The Trans-Allegheny Asylum (Weston State Hospital) was started in 1858. Construction was interrupted by the Civil War, and the building first opened for patients in October, 1864. Completed in 1880, it is the largest hand-hewn stone structure in the United States, perhaps the world, with nine acres under its roof.
