Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike
Oakland, WV
This 1830s mansion was the centerpiece of a 1,000-acre plantation of James McNeil Stephenson, a Wood County public servant and businessman. He was the primary driving force for completion of the Parkersburg-Staunton and the Northwestern Turnpikes (now WV47 and US50), which meet here in front of Oakland. A tollhouse once stood on the front lawn. The house, with many of its furnishings still intact, is still occupied by his descendants, and may be viewed from the road.
