Special Considerations
There are four state scenic backways that intersect this historic byway.
In the approximately 65 miles between Weston and Parkersburg, there are limited opportunities for fuel, food or restrooms, and none may be open after business hours.
Restrictions
Backways may be closed in the winter due to inclement weather. Some backways are not paved but should still be accessible by two-wheel drive vehicles in good weather.
Camp Allegheny Backway, Cheat Mountain Backway, and Rich Mountain Backway may be seasonally closed at times due to snow or mud.
Seasons
- Best Time to Drive
The byway is spectacularly beautiful during fall color season. Some attractions are open only in summer.
- High Season
Traffic is only an issue in major towns during locally busy times.
