High Peaks Scenic Byway (NYS Route 73)
Visitor Services
Facilities to support the traveler are available in the two hamlets, Keene and Keene Valley, and in the Village of Lake Placid. Traveler facilities in the hamlets include small restaurants, retail establishment and gas stations of a size that is commensurate with the scale and charm of the small hamlet communities. Overnight accommodations in the hamlets include motels and inns that attract outdoor recreationalists and small travel groups seeking solitude and relaxation. Typical establishments are the High Peaks Inn Bed and Breakfast, the Ausable Inn, and the Snow Goose Lodge.
Closer to Lake Placid are a number of motels that normally accommodate skiers and Olympic Sport spectators. These establishments are more suited to larger groups, special events and tours. Typical establishments include the White Sled Motel, Jack Rabbit Inn, and the Cascade Inn and Restaurant.
More rustic accommodations exist throughout the corridor that attract the outdoor recreationalists. Typical establishments include Adirondack Loj, The Barkeater Country Inn, and the Whispering Pines Campground.
Finally, extensive user services are available in Lake Placid where the travelers can find large hotel chains, a variety of restaurants, retail stores, travel services, and visitor destinations.

Special Considerations
With a high level of road maintenance, the highways is suited for travel by all forms of passenger and commercial touring vehicles. Tour buses are accommodated in the same manner as any other vehicles traveling along the route. Parking for tour buses is accommodated at commercial establishments throughout corridor. Adequate space is available along the undeveloped segments of highway to drop off and pick up outdoor recreationalists and hikers.
Unexpected snow storms can affect travel time. However, because of the importance of the highway and the high level of use it receives, NYSDOT has a clear pavement policy for the plowing of the roadway.
Restrictions
There are no seasonal limitations or planned road closings along Route 73 due to snow falls or flooding. Travel delays are minimal.
