High Peaks Scenic Byway (NYS Route 73)
Bicycle/Pedestrian Facilities
Most existing bicycle travel along Route 73 is long distance recreational travel normally associated with the more experienced, skilled cyclist. There is a potential traffic safety condition for bicycling involving segments of the highway with 3,500 AADT, posted speed limits of 55 mph, and a 14 foot wide curb lane. This width combined with the traffic conditions, however, is considered adequate according to the AASHTO Guidelines for Bicycle Facilities and The Impact of Bicycling on Scenic Highways; Planning Requirements That Affect Bicycle Use and Safety on Scenic Highways.
Future Improvements for Route 73 will consider expanding bicycling use to recreational, as well as experienced cyclists and in that context will include additional pavement where necessary and the striping of 4 foot wide shoulder.
The greatest demand for pedestrian accommodations outside of the hamlets is in the vicinity of trail-heads and roadside natural attractions. In these areas, pedestrians are accommodated on the shoulder of the road. In the hamlets, pedestrians are accommodated on existing sidewalks. Future improvements for pedestrians will include adequate space along the highway at trailhead access points.
