Driving the Byway

Directions for Accessing the Byway

• From Rapid City the visitor can take SD (state highway) 79 south to SD 36. Proceed west on SD 36, and as the highway enters Custer State Park the visitor continues west on US 16A approximately 2 miles to the Wildlife Loop Road.
• From Mount Rushmore National Memorial the visitor can access the byway by proceeding east on SD 244, then southeast via US 16A to the junction with SD 36, then proceed west on US 16A approximately 2 miles.

Directions for Driving the Byway

From the east, the byway starts approximately 2 miles west of the junction of highway US 16A and SD 36.

• From US 16A, turn south on Wildlife Loop Road.
• A few miles before the road turns east, you will pass the Wildlife Station Visitor Center.
• Continue east on Wildlife Loop Road. The road will turn northwest until it reaches SD 87 where the byway ends.
