Blackwoods Byway
Tunk Mountain, ME

Tunk Mountain stands at 1,157 feet and is a difficult, but worthwhile two-hour climb that begins on the north side of Blackwoods Byway immediately following the entrance to Dynamite Brook Road. This region is thickly forested, and small trails scatter and cross the landscape. Bring a compass or a GPS, because it is possible to get lost in the dense forests. On your way, you'll pass a group of remote, undeveloped ponds created by glaciers over 5,000 years ago. Once you reach the top of Tunk Mountain, you'll have views to the south and east over lakes to the Atlantic. Looking north and west, you'll see the vast forests you just explored. On a clear day, you'll be able to spot Mount Katahdin, Maine's tallest peak located in Baxter State Park.
