Driving the Byway
The Hanging Rock Scenic Byway takes travelers along North Carolina state roads and county roads past small towns and Hanging Rock State Park.
Getting to the Byway
- From US 52, follow NC 65 north from Winston-Salem.
- Drive towards the community of Rural Hall.
- At the intersection of NC 65 and 66, turn left onto NC 66 North to Mt. Olive.
Driving the Byway
- When NC 66 intersects with SR 2000 (Denny Road), the byway begins.
- Continue on NC 66 for 4.5 miles, passing through the community of Mt. Olive.
- At the community of Gap, the road forks.
- Take the right fork which is Moore's Springs Road (SR 1001).
- Pass Hanging Rock State Park, or take a side trip to explore it.
- Continue on SR 1001 past Moores Springs to NC 89 West.
- Turn right onto SR 8 for a side trip into the historic community to Danbury.
- Return to the byway and travel on NC 89 West through the Sauratown Mountains.
- The route ends at McBride Road (SR 1742) in the community of Shelton Town.
