Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve (AK)
This is a state-managed facility of 48,000 acres. It comprises about 50 percent of the immediate byway corridor.
Location: Begins at Mile Point 9.4 on the Haines Highway

American Bald Eagle Foundation (AK)
This fine facility is a quality natural history center. Its focus is on the bald eagle, but it covers well the full range of natural history topics of the area.
Location: 113 Haines Highway. Intersection of Haines Highway and Second Avenue.

This homestead was built in 1903 and is undergoing restoration so it can be opened to the public.
Location: 1 mile out of downtown Haines.

Council Grounds River Trail (AK)
The trail connects the Council Grounds to the North Council Grounds and extends to the north toward the village of Klukwan.
Location: Mile Point 20.7 on the Haines Highway.

Dalton Cache/U.S.-Canada Border (AK)
The Bureau of Land Management maintains the Dalton Cache, an unstaffed historic cabin that is not open to the public on the Canada/US border.
Location: Mile Point 40.3 on the Haines Highway.

Visitors can observe fish wheels in use along the Chilkat River. These large devices use the river current to catch salmon and were developed by the Tlingit people to gather large volumes of fish running up the river.
Location: Mile Point 9 and 10 on the Haines Highway. Wheels are in the river on the left with pull-outs for viewing on both sides of the highway.

This early 1900s wood-structure fort consists of military housing, barracks, military ancillary buildings and parade grounds.
Distance from byway: 0.5 mi / 0.8 km Travel time: 5 minutes Directions: Just a few minutes from the 4-way stop on Main Street downtown Haines - south on Second Avenue; turn left on the Haines Highway. Fort Seward buildings are on the right-hand side of the road.

The world's largest number of Bald Eagles gather in Haines to take advantage of the late salmon run.

There is a large interpretive sign about local Tlingit culture adjacent to the airport.

The first in-person experience with Haines for many travelers is the Visitors Center in downtown Haines.
Location: 122 Second Avenue; one block from Main Street.
