New River Valley Byway
Doughton Park, NC

Doughton Park is a countryside full of open meadows and pioneer cabins that gives viewers an opportunity to connect with the lives of those who have gone before. The area, once known as The Bluffs, is named after Congressman Robert L. Doughton, an instrumental advocate of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Doughton Park is one of the best places along the byway to view animal life, including white-tailed deer, raccoons, red and gray foxes, and bobcats. In the late spring, the landscape comes alive with shows of flame azalea and rhododendron.
