Driving the Byway

The North Durham Country Byway meanders through the peaceful plantations north of the metropolitan area of Durham. It will take a minimum of 45 minutes to drive this byway, but travelers may want to stop for a closer look at some of the points of interest.

To Get to the Byway:

  • Driving along I-85, take exit 182 and travel north on Red Mill Road (SR 1632) for 4.5 miles.
  • Turn right and follow Teknika Parkway.
  • Turn left back onto Red Mill Road at the first stop sign.
  • Turn right at the intersection with Old Highway 75 and begin the byway.

or

  • Traveling from Durham, take US 501.
  • Turn right onto SR 1628 and begin the byway.

To Drive the Byway:

  • From Old Highway 75, travel for 1.5 miles before turning left onto Stagville Road (SR 1615). You will pass Stagville Plantation on the way.
  • After passing the planned Horton Grove Commercial Center, travel for four miles.
  • At the town of Bahama, the byway turns right to follow Bahama Road.
  • If you turn left, you will be able to explore the village and it's old time commerce.
  • Bahama Road leads to Lake Michie
  • Travel for 3.2 miles and pass Mount Tabor United Methodist Church.
  • Travel for 2.6 miles and turn left onto Red Mountain Road (SR 1417).

An Alternate Route

  • An alternate byway route is available that leads through Hill Demonstration Forest. It includes a one-lane bridge and views of the Flat River.
  • To travel this route turn onto Hampton Road (SR 1603) after 3.7 miles on Bahama Road.
  • Travel on SR 1603 for 1.6 miles until you reach Wilkins Road (SR 1614).
  • A quick right will put you on State Forest Road (SR 1614).
  • State Forest Road leads to Moores Mill Road and back onto the byway.

Back to the Byway

  • Follow Red Mountain road for 4.6 miles.
  • Turn left onto Moores Mill Road and continue until you reach US 501.
  • Continue traveling US 501 for 1.4 miles.
  • Then turn right onto South Lowell Road. Continue on this road for five miles.
  • The byway ends at the intersection of Guess Road (SR 1003) and South Lowell Road.

The Last Leg

  • The last section of the road is located on Orange Factory Road (SR 1628).
  • To get to SR 1628, turn left onto Guess Road (SR 1003) and drive 1.3 miles.
  • Turn left onto Mason Road and follow it until you reach US 501.
  • Turn left after traveling 0.3 of a mile and turn right onto Orange Factory Road (SR 1628).
  • Continue three miles until the byway ends at the intersection with Stagville Road.
