Outer Banks Scenic Byway
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, NC
The 198-foot Cape Hatteras lighthouse, a National Historic Landmark, is the nation’s tallest brick lighthouse. The famed lighthouse, first lit in December 1870, is open for climbing from the Friday of Easter weekend to Columbus Day. The structure, painted with black and white candy stripes, is the central feature of a light station with a Keepers Quarters and a Double Keepers Quarters. Moving the lighthouse due to shoreline erosion was a 1999 engineering marvel.
