Outer Banks Scenic Byway
Cedar Island, NC

Cedar Island was once home to a large Native American village, evidenced by artifacts housed in universities. Many European settlers married women from this village. Gradually the Indian culture was absorbed by the European culture. The culture was isolated well into the 20th century. A fish house, a net maker and “boom trucks” used for lifting nets are common sights. Down East folks preserve a unique maritime culture with their occupations, folk art and speech patterns.
