Outer Banks Scenic Byway
NC Ferries of Hatteras Inlet and Pamlico Sound, NC

Water travel was and is critical along the Outer Banks. Today, state-owned ferries connect the islands to each other and the mainland. Weather dominates life and disrupts ferry schedules. The state ferry system replaced private operations in 1957. The ferry system provides maritime employment for many “bankers.” Today’s ferries are painted with the school colors of North Carolina’s colleges and universities.
