Outer Banks Scenic Byway
Cedar Island National Wildlife Refuge, NC

This national wildlife refuge is noteworthy for its beauty and grandeur. The Monroe Gaskill Bridge rises high above the marsh, affording a view of low-lying Core Banks, which parallel the Outer Banks Scenic Byway and enclose Core Sound east of the byway. The marsh and its wildlife provided food for Down East and its previous Native American residents. Viewing this marsh enables visitors to see the challenges and beauty of living in this isolated coastal environment.
