Outer Banks Scenic Byway
Harkers Island, NC
After a devastating 1899 hurricane, Core and Shackleford Banks villages moved to higher ground, floating dismantled homes across the sound to re-settle here. Isolated until 1941 when a bridge was built, Harkers Island preserves Down East’s unique cultural landscape. The working harbor is its economic mainstay. Island fishermen and boat builders are legendary. The island is home to the state’s first Mormon church, other denominations, an elementary school, shops and restaurants.
