Outer Banks Scenic Byway
Hatteras, NC
This fishing village was settled in the 1780s. In 1866 the Burrus family built its first grocery. The family still runs the Red & White store at the village center. The 1902 U.S. Weather Bureau, adjacent to the Burrus store, is now fully restored and open as a visitor center. Graveyard of Atlantic Museum tells maritime history. The village, a Preserve America community, has a walking/riding tour of historic homes, Civil War markers and an active harbor and docks.
