Outer Banks Scenic Byway
Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge, NC

Established in 1989 to protect and enhance wooded wetlands, Roanoke River National Wildlife Refuge consists of bottomland hardwoods and swamps with high waterfowl value along the Roanoke River. The Nature Conservancy calls it "one of the last great places." The refuge is home to 214 bird species and is one of the largest natural wild turkey populations in North Carolina.
