Monticello Crossroads Scenic Byway
Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center, GA
The Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center encompasses 6,500 acres of forests, fields, and ponds in the Georgia Piedmont. Discover a wildlife and birdwatcher's paradise while roaming its various habitats. Take your hiking shoes and camera, perhaps even your tape recorder and camcorder, and enjoy the relaxation accompanying the wonders of nature.
Are hawks your greatest interest? Red-tailed and marsh hawks can be seen hunting for food throughout the area. How about ducks? Many varieties abound on the 29 ponds. Did you remember your tape recorder? Try taping the songs of the warblers or other birds along the way. Be sure you photograph the new hatchlings in the barn owl nests ... or catch them on video as they learn to fly.
If mammals are more to your liking, tread carefully and you will find everything from white-tailed deer to fox-squirrels and the comical little chipmunks scurrying about their business. Beware of the skunks and bobcats, however. Its better to see them from a distance!
Looking for ideas for building your new house? For the latest in tried and true engineering methods, watch the beaver as they create dams and construct their lodges.
A final laugh or photo for the day may be obtained while watching the river otters at play on their muddy slides along the way.
