South Big Horn/Red Wall Scenic Backway
The Wyoming Centennial Monument, WY
This sheep-ranching memorial captures the essence of stock trails with the inscription:
Millions of sheep hooves have 'tapped their tunes' on the rocks of these mountains, as generations of Wyoming ranchers have trailed herds to cool mountain pastures in the spring and back to the lowlands in the fall before winter assaults the highlands...
"It's a neat little memorial to a very busy place," says Frank (Pinky) Ellis, a second-generation rancher along the South Big Horn/Red Wall Scenic Backway. "This crossroad was once known as a place where, in a given time, more sheep crossed than any other place in the world."
