Strait of Juan de Fuca Highway - SR 112
Salt Creek Recreation Area/County Park, WA
This 196-acre county park is famous for its Tongue Point Marine Life Sanctuary. The park was purchased from the Federal General Services Administration after being surplussed at the end of World War II. The site was used during World War II as a harbor-defense military base called Fort Hayden. The remnants of Fort Hayden are preserved on the site - two concrete bunkers which housed 16" cannons and several siting bunkers, as well as an old World War II army gun emplacement.
Visitors can enjoy upland forests, rocky bluffs, rocky tide pools, a sand beach access area, Salt Creek River access, playground and play fields, and hiking trails to Striped Peak. Visitors can also see picture-perfect views of the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Crescent Bay, and Victoria, British Columbia.
