Historic National Road - Illinois
Vandalia, IL

Vandalia offers the visitor more than just a look back at historic Illinois. Although, as the home of the state's oldest existing capitol, you may want to don a top hat or a hoop skirt as you learn more about the history behind this town.

Vandalia served as the capital of Illinois for a twenty year period from 1819 to 1839. The old state capitol building serves as the focus of many city events. You may want to visit the third week of June when the city hosts the annual Grand Levee. This three-day event echoes the celebrations of days prior to 1840. Enjoy games, music, and feasts on the lawn of the old statehouse, or go inside on a candlelit tour to complete your trip to yesteryear. With several community parks, a community pool, and Vandalia Lake nearby, you'll have plenty to do during your stay, whether it's for couple hours or several days.
