Special Considerations

Stay on marked trails. Avoid cliffs, earthcracks and steam vents as the edges of these features can be slippery and unstable.

Lava fields are unshaded and hot. Wear headgear, sunglasses and sunscreen, and drink plenty of fluids.

Volcanic fumes are hazardous; persons with heart or respiratory problems, infants, young children and pregnant women are especially at risk and should avoid areas where fumes are present.
