This overlook provides a view of the Pacific Ocean on the shoreline where black lava meets the sea. Signs explain the blackburn butterfly, and its relationship to native plant species. The impact of the 1868 tsunami, which destroyed villages on the Puna coast, is explained. Also explained is the impact of alien species on native species.

This overlook provides the park visitor with a view of Hawaii Volcanoes Wilderness Area, 123.1 acres of the park that are managed for their solitude, native ecosystem, and Native Hawaiian cultural settlement values.
