Chain of Craters Road
Muliwai a Pele, HI

This platform overlooks a major lava channel. During the 1969-1974 eruption from Mauna Ulu, it was a river full to the rim of flowing, red-hot, bright orange lava. Unless an eruption has recently occurred, the visitor will only be able to imagine this stunning sight.

Both sides of the road here show the two types of lava flows: a'a and pahoehoe.
