Portage Lake Lift Bridge (MI)
The Portage Lake Lift Bridge is the heaviest and widest double-decked vertical lift bridge in the world and is the pride of the cities of Houghton and Hancock, the two communities whose gap it bridges. The original bridge on this site was a wooden bridge built in 1875, which was replaced by a steel bridge built in 1901 and subsequently damaged when a ship collided into it in 1905. Though the bridge was never fully repaired, it stayed in service until 1959 when the current lift bridge was built.
