The Energy Loop: Huntington/Eccles Canyons Scenic Byway
Scofield, UT

The historic mining town of Scofield was once the largest town in Carbon County. A truly multicultural town, Scofield claimed residents from England, Wales, Japan, China, and Finland. Entire families from these different cultures came together to work in the coal mines. On May 1, 1900, the largest mining disaster in U.S. history to date took the lives of hundreds of miners at the Winter Quarters Mine just outside of Scofield.

Now Scofield is fading into a ghost town. Once a rival for the county seat, there are only about 26 residents that stay year-round although the population grows with the influx of summer residents. Feel free to take a look around the historic buildings of this little town hidden among the mountains.
