Sheyenne River Valley Scenic Byway
Pyramid or Viking Hill, ND
Pyramid Hill forms a very large, obvoiusly geometric shape near Fort Ransom. The mound measures 650 feet long, 520 feet wide, approximately 100 feet high, and is level on top with the north, west and south sides of uniform shape.
Debate continues over the origins of Pyramid Hill. Geologists claim that glacier movement sculpted the hill naturally, while others believe that about one third of the mound is man-made, being built an estimated 5000 to 9000 years ago by an ancient civilization.
More recently, the largely Norwegian population of area residents erected a Viking statue on Pyramid Hill.
