Sheyenne River Valley Scenic Byway
Writing Rock, ND
Writing rock contains incised inscriptions consisting of long, straight grooves, circles, and some irregular lines and strange figures. It is located near the foot of Bears Den Hill across the ravine from the old fort site.
The origin of the markings on Writing Rock is currently under debate. Some believe that the marks are geological, formed by running water or scratched into the rock by ancient glaciers. Others claim that the markings were made by paleolithic tribes. Several interesting Native American legends are also connected with this stone.
