Beatrice is in the center of historic Gage County where the pioneer spirit is still strong. The Homestead National Monument of America is only about 4.5 miles west on Highway 4. In addition to this, there is an Oregon Trail marker located 1¾ miles west of Lanham which commemorates the site where 300,000 pioneers crossed into Nebraska from Kansas on their trek west. Experience the feel of open prairie space that the pioneers would have experienced.
Historic buildings also are a main attraction to the area. The Gage County Museum is on the National Register of Historical Places and is housed in the Burlington Railroad Depot which was built in 1906. This museum documents the history of the county with WWII displays, a medical wing, the story of Robert Taylor, the actor who grew up in the area, and many other displays. Also of historical significance, the Filley Stone Barn is a historic three-story limestone barn which was built in 1874. Many events are held at the Barn, reminding visitors of the early settlers around Beatrice.
There are many recreational opportunities for visitors in Beatrice and the surrounding area. There is a water park as well as golfing in Beatrice. Rockford Lake State Recreation Area is located 6 miles east of Beatrice and offers the traveler a perfect getaway for fishing, camping, picnicking, and boating. Located 15 miles south and 3 miles east near Odell is Big Indian Recreation Area where boating, fishing, camping, and hiking are also available.
