Lewis & Clark Scenic Byway
DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge, NE
The DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge is known for the great sights of migrating ducks and geese. The Missouri River Valley on which the Refuge lies, has undergone considerable change over millions of years. Prehistoric flooding and the shifting Missouri River caused the Missouri River Valley to form. In more recent years, since the 1800s, land clearing, draining, river channelization, and flood control have changed the nature of the land. The area acts as a stop for migrating ducks and geese now, and during normal years, a half million snow geese and 75,000 ducks use the refuge for their fall migration. Other species of wildlife include deer, cottontails, raccoons, coyotes, and fox squirrels. Various trails weave throughout the refuge to allow visitors a chance to enjoy the plant and animal life. In addition to these natural features, you can see the hull of 178 foot Bertand steamboat that lies buried in a pond. Fishing and boating are also available.
