Lewis & Clark Scenic Byway
South Sioux City, NE
Known as the "wildest little town on the Missouri" during Frontier days, South Sioux City has many features of a metropolitan area, while still maintaining the friendly feel of a rural small town. South Sioux City is situated where Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota meet. The city was an important stop on the Lewis and Clark Trail. The Sergeant Floyd Monument and Park memorializes the only US soldier to die on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Missouri River may be accessed easily from this area, and Crystal Cove has a boat ramp for fishing boats, a swimming beach, picnic area, and a paved walking trail. The Atokad Park features horse racing and there are historic buildings in the city. The Meisch House was built in 1888 and is an example of the "square" or "cubic" house. The Emmanuel Lutheran Church was the first Lutheran church in the Nebraska Territory. The O'Connor House is a historic two-story brick home that was built by Captain Cornelius O'Connor for his wife and eight kids.
