Official Designations

A road is designated as a "byway" by government agencies or private organizations. This website focuses on those byways recognized by Congress in the National Scenic Byways Program of the Federal Highway Administration.

A road may be named as a byway by many agencies. These may include its state byway program, the National Park Service, the U.S. Forest Service, and more. Designations known to us are listed below, as well as the designating agency and the date of designation. Contact each agency for further details about their byway programs.

  • Nebraska State Scenic Byway

    Designated February 8, 2006

    The South Platte River Trails byway, which was designated in 1999, was extended and renamed to form the Platte River Scenic Trails. In 2006 the route was extended across the length of Nebraska and renamed and redesignated as the Lincoln Highway Scenic & Historic Byway.
