North Platte, NE

North Platte is considered by many to be in the center of Nebraska, and this town offers all of the conveniences of a larger city, with many choices for lodging or recreational opportunities. There are four golf courses in North Platte (Indian Meadows, Iron Eagle, Lake Maloney, and North Platte Country Club). In addition, the North Platte Recreation Complex offers indoor sports facilities, such as a swimming pool, racquetball courts, basketball court, weight room, and more.

In the surrounding area of Lincoln County, there are opportunities to go hiking, biking, fishing, and boating. Many lakes and reservoirs in the area make it a prime spot for fishing and hunting. Lake Maloney is only five miles south of North Platte and the North and South Platte combine to make the Platte River, which is home to many types of wildlife and hunting opportunities.

North Platte has been important in the history of the West which is documented in places such as the Lincoln County Historical Museum. The Wild West was at home in North Platte, and the city's most famous resident, Buffalo Bill Cody, was the personification of the Old West for many. He was the showman of the Wild West Show and the Old Glory Blowout, which was the precursor of today's rodeo. Today, NEBRASKAland DAYS is an event held in June that includes a rodeo, concerts, an art show, a parade, cowboy poetry, and some good old fashioned western fun.

North Platte was an important frontier town, but its true growth came with the Union Pacific Railroad. Today, Bailey Yard is the largest railroad classification yard in the world.
