Special Considerations
Consider getting gas in Kamas or Evanston as there is just one place to get gas on the byway itself (at Bear River Lodge, near the Utah-Wyoming border.)
The road climbs into high country, surrounded by peaksthat top 12,000 feet. Be prepared for high-altitude conditions and rapid weather changes, especially in spring and fall.
Restrictions
This road is usually closed in winter, from mid-October through late May, due to heavy snowfall and mountainous terrain.
Seasons
- Best Time to Drive
Late spring has wildflowers; summer is popular with recreationalists; and autumn has wonderful fall foliage.
- High Season
Summer is busiest since the facilities (and the road) are usually free of snow by then.
