Nebo Loop Scenic Byway
Peteetneet Museum and Cultural Arts Center, UT
The Peteetneet Cultural Arts Center and Museum is a beautiful, restored historic school building surrounded by a rose garden. Children gather in this building for classes (such as dance) and adults also come to the Center to continue their education in many ways. The building includes a dance studio and a Little Theater, both of which are used for classes, auditions and performances.
The Center is also used for all kinds of fun community activities, such as Peteetneet's Cowboy Poetry Roundup, Western Night, and the Legacy Festival and Onion Days. Families also enjoy outdoor activities including picnics, winter sledding and gatherings around its outdoor natural amphitheater.
The Center was named after Peteetneet, a Ute Indian leader who lived in the mid-1800s near the creek running through what is now called Payson (called Fort Peteetneet by early settlers.) Although he died Dec. 23, 1861, Payson's elementary school, The Peteetneet School, was built in 1901, to stand in honor of this leader. The Peteetneet School now serves as the Cultural Arts Center and Museum.
