The byway also provides national forest recreation that is fully accessible for people with disabilities. The campgrounds and overlooks are fully accessible, and the Blackhawk Campground features a horse transfer facility that enables people with physical challenges to mount and dismount horses with minimal assistance. The Payson Lakes Campground offers a fully accessible lakeside nature trail, fishing pier, and beach area. Payson Lakes is the location for the annual fishing derby for children with disabilities.
