Scenic Byway 12
Capitol Reef National Park, UT

Named by early pioneers because the huge domed formation reminded them of the nation's capitol building, Capitol Reef National Park is a maze of brilliantly colored cliffs, natural bridges, domes, and stone arches. The Waterpocket Fold, an impressive buckling in the Earth's crust, stretches for 100 miles in the park.

The park's unique features include orchards (bearing fruit in season), the old Fruita Schoolhouse, and other pioneer structures. Take the park's Scenic Drive and marvel at the slickrock scenery that has made this park famous. Along the scenic drive, trails lead to overlooks, remote canyons, natural arches, and slickrock wilderness.

Capitol Reef's modern Fruita Campground, as well as two primitive park campgrounds are open all year. Backcountry camping is allowed through much of the park; a free permit is required. Services are available in Torrey. Canyonlands National Park is located east of Capitol Reef, via Hwy 24 and 95.
