Scenic Byway 143 - Utah's Patchwork Parkway

Conventional tour buses can and do traverse Utah's Patchwork Parkway to access resorts at Brian Head and Panguitch Lake, as well as Cedar Breaks National Monument.

Special Considerations

Parowan (at the bottom of the drive) is at 5,990 feet; Brian Head Peak (just off the drive) is 11,307 feet. The byway doesn't climb quite that high, but it does climb to over 10,000 feet. Take precautions if you are not accustomed to high altitude.

Mountainous terrain and limited sight distances discourage pedestrian use of the road, but adjacent trailheads provide access to thousands of acres of lands ranging from designated wilderness areas to handicapped-accessible pullouts and overlooks.

Restrictions

Parts of the route have 13% grades and some sharp switchbacks. Trailers and semi-trailer trucks are not recommended. In the winter, the section of road from Parowan to Brian Head Ski Resort is kept open; the rest is closed.

Snowplowing occurs only during daylight hours. Wind and snow conditions can create occasional road closures from Cedar Breaks National Monument to Mammoth Creek junction. Signs in Parowan and Panguitch warn motorists of any such closures.

Seasons

Best Time to Drive

Summer is the best time to drive the byway, since it is open in its entirety during summer months.

Fall

Autumn allows travelers to experience historic sites in gateway communities and an astounding display of fall colors set against Cedar Breaks National Monument.

High Season

The byway is rarely busy, even during ski season or the peak of summer. Festivals and holidays generate crowds, and thus may limit the number of available campgrounds.

Winter

In the winter, the section of road from Parowan to Brian Head Ski Resort is kept open; the rest is closed.

High elevations and steep grades require regular snow plowing in winter months, which occurs during daylight hours only. Snow tires or chains are advised during winter months.
