Special Considerations
The city of Beaver is at 6,000 feet in altitude and there is usually a 30 to 40 degree flux in temperature from night to day. During the winter it gets to be about 40 degrees F during the day and 10 degrees F at night. (Temperatures are more extreme in the canyon.) In the summer temperatures reach the low 90's during the day. Travelers should take care to wear sunscreen; the sun is strong even in winter due to the high altitude.
Restrictions
All the canyon roads are very curvy, drive carefully. They are well maintained by the state and many are plowed regularly throughout the winter, especially the road up to Elk Meadows Ski Resort.
Seasons
- Best Time to Drive
The fall is the most beautiful time of year along the byway. You don't have to go to New England to see fall colors among the golden aspen.
- High Season
Summer is the busiest season along this byway.
