Northwest Passage Scenic Byway
Long Camp (Kamiah City Park), ID

This city park is located in the floodplain along the southern edge of town. As a city park, it serves as a staging area for community events. There are shade trees on the well-maintained site.

The site is significant to the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In May 1806, the Corps of Discovery reunited here with the Nez Perce Indians. Because the snow was too deep to allow passage over the Lolo Trail, the Corps set up camp to wait for the snow to thaw. This camp became known as Long Camp due to their almost one-month stay. During their stay, Clark acted as a physician to the Nez Perce, and the Corps spent much time in revelry and merriment with the Indians.
